What is a Hunter's Moon and When does it occur?

The Hunter’s Moon occurs in October, the first full Moon after the Harvest Moon.

The Hunter’s Moon occurs in October, the first full Moon after the Harvest Moon.

The Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon after the Harvest Moon and it usually occurs in October. This was the perfect month to hunt, with prey unable to hide in the now bare fields. The particularly bright Hunter's Moon also gave hunters an opportunity to stalk prey at night. Other names include the Travel Moon and Dying Grass Moon.

In ancient times, it was common to track the changing seasons by following the lunar month rather than the solar year, which our modern calendar is based on. The full moon name was often a description relating to a particular activity or event that occurred during that month, like Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon, Flower Moon, Strawberry Moon, or Snow Moon.

We created a colourful collection of Moon art prints inspired the full moon names. The Hunter’s Moon is one of our favourites with its rich orange and yellow tones. Perfect for autumn! View our Moon Prints Selection Here
