Art & Design Trends for 2023
We are starting the year by looking to the future. What themes will be popular in art and design in 2023? What colours are trending for 2023? Here is our list of predictions for art themes, wall art & design that we might see more of this upcoming year.
2023 Art & Design Trends
Art and design trends for 2023 reflect a complicated world with both hope and despair for the future. There are a lot of polar opposite themes trending, such as maximalism and minimalism, the great indoors and the great outdoors, looking to technological advances (and at times a dystopian future) as well as a longing for a simpler past, with vintage furniture, design and inspiration. There is no need to follow just one theme, embrace a mesh-up of whatever you like!
Our list of art and design themes and trends for 2023:
Look to the Past: folklore and mythical figures, fairy tales aesthetic, modern witches, pagan and Wiccan traditions, hand drawn Illustration, traditional art techniques, hand-made craft, a longing for the ‘good old days’, vintage inspired art, designs and fonts.
Look to the Future: dystopian future art, shiny metallic textures, hot foil printing, ‘weird’ interior design and AI made art and design.
The Great Indoors: homey colourful rooms, cosy vibes, the modern farmhouse, harvest festival aesthetic, make it yourself attitude, vintage furniture and cosy warm art.
The Great Outdoors: art depicting hiking, foraging and a connection with nature, design products for the great outdoors, van-life aesthetic and the mountaincore trend continues.
Minimalism: stripped back barely-there design, back to basic interiors, simple vintage fonts, simple and minimalist but also bold designs.
Maximalism: the use of bold colour combinations, graphic blocks of clashing colours, african patterns, vibrancy and colours, art inspired by expressionism and cubism, ‘weirdcore’ design, mushroom décor and fantasy art. “More is More” is key to this trend.
Minimalism: calming neutrals, stripped back interiors, cosy beiges and taupes, pumice and clay, ‘desert, dust and rust’, tactile natural materials, lime plaster walls, simple but bold designs.
Green living: grow your own vegetables, self sustainable homes, eco travel themes, train travel with inter-railing and sleeper-train trip aesthetics. Mushrooms are still going strong both as images and now also used as a materials (mushroom ‘leather’). 2023 will hopefully bring a focus of real sustainability and not just greenwashing!
Colours: Etsy colours of the year are Indigo blue and Honeycomb yellow. Pantone has chosen Viva Magenta as the colour of 2023.
