About Beltane

Beltane is the celebration of spring and the beginning of summer. It is an ancient Celtic May Day festival, falling halfway between the spring equinox (Ostara) and the summer solstice (Litha). Beltane is a Celtic word, meaning 'the fires of Bel'. At this time, special bonfires, thought to have protective powers, would be lit then followed by a feast. The fire was also though to aid fertility.

Beltane is celebrated as one of the eight sabbats from the pagan ‘Wheel of the Year’.

There are countless variations of May Day festivals, many involving fire, maypoles and fertility rites. Maypoles and burning of bonfires at this time is still common at many European folk festivals today.
